PURPOSE:To improve the reliability by moving a housing in the tape breadthwise direction in accordance with the magnitude of a signal detected by reproducing data for servo and making it possible that write and read heads coincide with the center of track easily. CONSTITUTION:A head positioning control circuit 18 operates a head position adjusting motor 16 through a head position adjusting servo circuit 14 to move a housing 13 including write and read heads 9 and 12 and moves capstan motor 21 and a capstan 22 through a tape driving circuit 19 to run forward a magnetic tape in a certain speed Simultaneously, the circuit 18 operates a write circuit 7 and a write driver 8 to record head positioning control data on the tape by the head 9. This data is read out by the head 12 and is amplified by an amplifier 11, and a read head output detecting circuit 10 feeds back the magni tude of the read data signal to the circuit 18. The circuit 18 moves the housing toward a tape reference edge while monitoring the fed-back data signal 23, and the motor 16 is stopped when the signal 23 is zero.
