The lamp (7) for illuminating the interior (1) is set into a recess or channel (6) in the top (5) of the cabinet. Placing the lamp in this position takes up no otherwise useful space and also prevents articles placed inside the refrigerator from entirely blocking the illumination. By placing the lamp (7) in front of the compartment (8) containing the evaporator, at the rear (2) of the cabinet, this space is also illuminated when the compartment door (9) is opened.
