PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ionomer of a thermoplastic elastomer having high performance, by treating a solution of a chlorosulfonated polyolefin in an organic solvent with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, etc. in an aliphatic lower alcohol through a reaction of a homogeneous system. CONSTITUTION:A solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium hydroxide, or an alkali metal alcoholate in an aliphatic lower alcohol e.g. methanol, is added to a solution prepared by dissolving a chlorosulfonated polyolefin in an organic solvent. e.g. 1,2-dichloroethane, and reacted therewith in a thermostatic bath while stirring in the homogeneous system. The resultant reaction mixture is then poured into a large amount of methanol to precipitate and separate the reaction product. Thus, the aimed ionomer containing groups expressed by the formula -SO3M (M is alkali metal) is obtained.
