The invention relates to a highly transparent heat-insulation coating (9) which appears neutral when looked through and when viewed from the outside, for a substrate (6) of transparent material, such as glass sheets and plastic films, and which can be used, in particular, for insulating glass sheets. The coating is built up from a layer system having the layer sequence metal oxide/silver/metal oxide, where the metal oxide (1, 5) is preferably bismuth oxide. The silver (3) is admixed with at least one substance of high melting point, for example tungsten, rhenium, tantalum, osmium, niobium, molybdenum and/or iridium, preferably tungsten in an amount of 0.4%. This prevents the formation of islands and droplets which has hitherto occurred on application of pure silver as a thin layer; the light absorption and thus the optical properties are thus greatly improved. <IMAGE>
