A switching device is proposed which is suitable for two different types of operating card. A first type of the operating card has contact points (17) which are arranged distributed over the entire length of a lateral edge (16), while a second type of operating cards is provided with contact points (31) only in a central region (32) of the lateral edge. Both types of operating cards have on both sides of the central region (32) one guide slot (20, 33) each. The guide slots correspond to guide webs (43, 44) which are arranged at right angles to an insertion slot (41) of a switching device (40) at the spacing of the guide slots. In the case of the operating card (30) of the second type, the card is notched on both sides of the guide slots (33, 34) in such a way as to produce a retracted lateral edge (35, 36) or a card which is constructed only somewhat wider than the central region. <IMAGE>
