PURPOSE:To enable the detection of the reference position positively in a short time, by providing a rotor mounted on a crank shaft, two electromagnetic pickups and a microcomputer having first and second latch circuits and a detection means. CONSTITUTION:As a rotor 1 turns with the rotation of a crank shaft of the engine, electromagnetic pickups 2 and 3 detect a crank angular velocity each time a convex of the rotor passes. The crank angular signals are latched respectively with first and second D type FFs 6 and 7, which are reset by a reset signal to be outputted from a microcomputer 8 in a fixed period after the falling of the output signal from the first D type FF6. Therefore, while the rotor 1 makes a turn, the outputs of the first D type FF6 and the second D type FF7 happen to be both at the level L. Such condition is detected with the computor 8 to be defined as the reference position of the rotor 1, namely, the crank shaft.
