A holding device (1) for workpieces (4) has a holding-down device (3) which can be lowered under its own weight onto the top (6) of the workpiece (4), can be fastened by means of clamping devices (13) so as to be fixed in relation to the bench, after lowering, and rests with slide surfaces (28) against the workpiece (4), so that the workpiece (4) is held without tensioning on the one hand, but without play on the other while being worked in the direction of the tool axes (26) and is able to execute extremely small oscillating movements at right angles to the said axes (26) in all directions. The holding-down device (3) is suspended in a gravity plate (20) so as to be free of overturning moment, in such a way that the workpiece (4) is not subjected to any deformation due to workpiece clamping. <IMAGE>
