Water heater having a gas-fired burner, which is supplied with fresh air by a blower and is equipped with a waste-gas pipe, an associated heat exchanger and a cold-water supply and hot-water outlet pipe, and also having taps for cold and hot water and a water switch for controlling the gas supply, characterised by a two-chamber membrane switch (13) which is arranged between the heat exchanger (6) and the hot-water tap (11) and switches on the blower (3) when the appliance is started up, one chamber (14) of which is connected to the pipe (8) leading to the hot-water tap (11) and the other chamber (15) of which is connected to the outlet pipe (16) of the water switch (17), a solenoid valve (18) being arranged in the cold-water supply pipe (7) upstream of the heat exchanger (6) in the flow direction or a solenoid valve (18) being arranged in the hot-water outlet pipe (8) downstream of the heat exchanger (6), the solenoid valve releasing the cold-water supply only if there is a flow in the waste-gas pipe (4). <IMAGE>
