In a chuck with a neck part which can be accommodated in the spindle of a machine tool and a head part serving to fasten a tool holder or tool, the neck part and head part are mounted in a strain-gauge sleeve in such a way as to be rotatable by limited amounts relative to one another. Sloping surfaces arranged on the facing front ends of the neck and head part transform the rotary movement into an axial movement which attempts to elongate the strain-gauge sleeve. The axial forces induced in the strain-gauge sleeve are detected by means of wire strain gauges.
