PURPOSE:To improve promptness of character recognizing process and to lighten the work load of a writer by providing a device that discriminates the presence of a reference pattern on a group of taken in strokes every time stroke recognition is made. CONSTITUTION:A controlling section including memories such as a CPU, RAM, ROM, etc. are incorporated in the body 1 of a computer, and inputting/ outputting action is controlled by the controlling section and character recognizing process is executed. An input tablet 2 brings the point of an exclusive inputting pen 9 into contact with the tablet face and moves to input desired characters an numerals by handwriting. In such a case, the controlling section collates a group of strokes already taken in with reference patterns in a dictionary every time stroke recognition of handwritten input characters is made, and discriminates the presence of a reference pattern that includes the group of strokes as constitutional stroke. Thus, when erroneous writing occurred indication of error etc. is made at the point of time to allow instantaneous rewriting. Promptness of character recognizing process is improved and the work load can be lightened.
