PURPOSE:To recognize character patterns stably by expressing the internal structure of characters according to the order of appearance of strokes and storing in a dictionary memory, and determining the correspondence of each stroke to be collated by a collated stroke determining section basing on the memory and collating. CONSTITUTION:The collated stroke determining section 10 reads the direction of scanning and the order of appearance from the second dictionary memory 9 and determines inputted stroke number referring to a stroke number buffer making these information as a key for retrieving, and sends to a reading circuit 6. Pseudo order of making strokes predetermined for each kinds of character and the orders of appearance of each stroke detected by the scanning of rightward, upward, leftward or downward are stored in the dictionary memory 9 for each strokes. Pattern data corresponding to the stroke number is read from an input buffer 5 by the circuit 6 and sent to a characteristic extracting section 2'. The extracting section 2' collates extracted characteristic and characteristic stored in the first dictionary memory 3'. Thus, collation is made on all kinds of characters and the kind of character highest in resemblance is outputted as the result of the recognition, and the recognition can be made even when the order of making strokes is mistaken.
