PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for complicated control grids and reduce the picture element pitch of a display panel and its size by arranging an electrode for control on an insulating anode substrate and forming a display pattern electrode on a dielectric film applied on the electrode. CONSTITUTION:A striped electrode 61 for control is formed into a preset shape by coating an insulating substrate 1 that configures an airtight container with an Al thin film at preset thicknesses. A dielectric film 4 with preset thicknesses is formed on it with the paste in which glass powder is kneaded with an organic binder is formed. Then, a striped display pattern electrode 2 with a preset shape is formed in the direction that intersects with the electrode 61 by re- coating the substrate with the Al thin film. The respective cross-points of such structured pattern electrode 2 and electrode 61 are capacity-coupled with a dielectric film 41 and a display pattern 3 is provided on the pattern electrode 2. In addition, a filament 7 is spaced at proper intervals with the pattern 3. As a result, the pitch of a picture element is reduced and a fluorescent character display panel is made compact.
