PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous operation by providing a means which detects whether an original is present or not, a means which detects the size of the original, and a means which displays the size of the original. CONSTITUTION:A central control part 8 discriminates whether a device is in the holding state or not. If the device is in the operating state, the processing is continued. If the device is in the holding state, the output of an original sensor 11a is checked to discriminate whether the original to be transmitted is set to a prescribed position or not. If the original is absent, ''original absence'' is displayed on a display device 9a to terminate the processing. if the original is present, ''original presence'' is displayed on thedisplay device 9a. The output of an original sensor 11b is checked through signal lines 12a-12c to detect the size of the original. Then, the size of the actually set original is displayed. Thus, the set state of the original to the prescribed position and the size of the original are detected, and results are displayed on the same display device.
