An essentially cylindrical discrete carbon fibril has an essentially constant diameter of between approx. 3.5 and approx. 70 nm, e.g. between approx. 7 and 25 nm, a length which is greater than approx. 100 times the diameter, an outer zone of several essentially continuous layers of ordered carbon atoms and a separate inner core area, each of the layers and the core being located essentially concentrically around the cylinder axis of the fibril. The entire fibril is preferably essentially free from a covering of thermal carbon. The invention relates furthermore to a quantity of such fibrils. The fibril or a quantity of fibrils can be produced by a suitable metalliferous particle being brought into contact for a suitable period of time and at a suitable pressure with a suitable gaseous compound containing carbon at a temperature of approx. 850-1200 degree C, the ratio on a dry weight basis between the compound containing carbon and the metalliferous particle being at least approx. 100:1. |
