PURPOSE:To inhibit the formation of scale during the heating of a steel contg. sulfur by adding prescribed percentages of SiO2, Al2O3 and Mn to blast furnace slag as a principal component and using the resulting antioxidant. CONSTITUTION:SiO2 and Al2O3 are added to the blast furnace slag as the principal component so as to provide a composition within the range defined by straight lines connecting a point A (35% CaO, 40% SiO2, 25% Al2O3), B (22% CaO, 60% SiO2, 18% Al2O3), C (10% CaO, 60% SiO2, 30% Al2O3) and D(20% CaO, 40% SiO2, 40% Al2O3) in the phase equilibrium diagram of a CaO- Al2O3-SiO2 three components system. Mn is further added by 5-25wt% of the total amount of the resulting composition to obtain an antioxidant.
