A process for manufacturing continuous castings of square or circular cross-section, in which the continuous casting emerging from the mould in an oval or diamond cross-sectional shape is changed from oval to circular or from diamond to square by shaping in a closed pass defined by a pair of grooved rolls with utilization of the residual heat of the casting. Where withdrawal rolls are used in the process a pair of these rolls may be used to shape the casting as well as acting as straightening rolls. Alternatively, in addition to the grooved shaping rolls a pair of withdrawal rolls may be positioned behind the grooved rolls so as to maintain the casting under tension while it is being shaped which assists in the reduction of the crosssection. The grooved rolls may have a number of closed passes, one beside the other, so that different cross-sections may be obtained without changing the mould. |
