An ink-jet recording apparatus having a detecting means for detecting ink pressure or an ink-residual quantity in the ink supply. The detecting means has a light shielding means coupled to the flexible diaphragm of the ink supply so as to be movable responsive to deformation of the flexible diaphragm. An ink pressure variation of -5 to -10 cm H2O results in a diaphragm displacement of 5 um/cm H2O to 20 mm/cm H2O.
