PURPOSE:To reduce the heat generating load of a picture element electrode, by providing a preheating electrode under the picture element electrode for melting ink and selectively printing a picture element of a character or picture and performing printing after preliminarily warming the temp. of the picture element electrode in a range preventing ink from reaching its softening point. CONSTITUTION:Picture element electrodes 1 each equipped with a usual protective layer or wiring pattern are not directly provided on a substrate 2 as usual but provided to said substrate 2 through an insulating film 3 comprising an insulating material and a preheating electrode 4. The shape, thickness and material of the picture element electrodes 1 are selected so that said electrodes 1 are heated in a range preventing heat-meltable ink from reaching its softening point. At first, a current is flowed to the preheating electrode 4 to generate heat and the picture element electrodes 1 are heated up to the range preventing the heat-meltable ink applied to a ribbon from reaching its softening point through the insulating film 3 by the generated heat and this state is held. When printing is started and a current is flowed to the picture element electrodes 1, said picture element electrodes starts printing from temp. higher than room temp. raised by the preheating electrode 4 and is raised in temp. to melt ink to perform printing. |
