The surface which is to be coated is cleaned by e.g. grinding or blasting to remove oxides etc. and to produce a rough surface. The surface is then coated with a layer of metal or alloy by e.g. flame or plasma spraying. The layer and substrate are sintered together using a laser beam (5) which is focussed to a spot of dia. below 1mm esp. below 5mm which has a focal point at a depth (d) below 3mm esp. below 2mm beneath the surface of the substrate.
