PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ether suitable as a material for molded article having improved appearance, having a specific repeating unit, showing low coloring, obtained by reacting a dihalogenobenzonitrile with an alkaline metallic salt of hydroquinone in a solvent under a specified condition. CONSTITUTION:(A) A dihalogenobenzonitrile wherein a halogen atom is prefer ably F or Cl is reacted with (B) a metallic salt of preferably N, or K of hydro quinone in a solvent consisting of a neutral polar solvent such as sulfolane, etc. and a solvent such as benzene, etc. to form an azeotropic mixture with water as the first stage reaction at 140-170 deg.C for 0.5-3hr. Then, the reaction is done as the second-stage reaction at 180-195 deg.C for 1-3hr to give the aimed ether having a repeating unit shown by the formula. The blending molar ratio of the component A/B is preferably 1.005-1.03.
