PURPOSE:In the production of a lower olefin by the counter-current contact of the thermally cracked gas of heavy and light hydrocarbons with a quench oil, a liquid oil and finally cooling water, the by-produced fuel oil is removed by using a thermally cracked gas of light hydrocarbon as a stripping gas. CONSTITUTION:The thermally cracked gas of heavy and light hydrocarbons is made to contact separately with quench oil, the mixture is made to contact countercurrently with a liquid oil and then cooling water, and the objective lower olefin is separated from the product. The oil obtained by the oil-water separation after the contact with the cooling water is used as the above liquid oil, and the oil after the contact with the liquid oil is used as the quench oil. The by-produced fuel oil existing in the line after the contact of the thermally cracked gas of light hydrocarbon with the quench oil is separated together with the deteriorated and polymerized quench oil by a gas-liquid separator inserted in the piping.
