PURPOSE:To improve lubrication performance by providing sliding parts applied with hardening process and oil sumps depressed by a certain depth from the sliding parts alternately on a cylinder liner in its longitudinal direction. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder liner 1 of a reciprocating engine is provided with sliding parts C bearing sliding load and shallow groove type lubricant sumps B adjacent to the sliding parts C alternately and independently on a sliding face between a piston 2 and a piston ring 3. The sliding parts C are and independently hardened on their surfaces by hardening. The depth t of the hardened layer should be desirably larger than that d of the lubricant sump B. By this, wear of the sliding part is largely reduced and the shape of the lubricant sump adjacent to the sliding part can be maintained for a long time, and better lubrication due to the presence of the lubricant sump can be maintained.
