PURPOSE:To switch automatically a servo circuit system and a PCM circuit system or the like in accordance with an identification (ID) signal at a reproducing time by recording the ID signal of the magnetic tape running direction, the recording density, or the like together with a PCM signal at a recording time. CONSTITUTION:When the ID signal is inputted to a controller 14 from an input terminal 13, the controller 14 sends a control signal corresponding to the recording condition to a servo system 15 to perform switching of the direction and the speed of a capstan motor 8, rotation control of a cylinder motor 9, and switching of switches 23 and 26 to M sides. Audio signals inputted to an audio processor 17 from input terminals 18 and 19 are added after ID data form the controller 14 is processed by an ID generator 16, and the FM signal and a pilot signal (f) are added by an adder 29 and are recorded on a magnetic tape 1 through a recording amplifier 28. Meanwhile, signal reproduced by heads 10a and 10b are inputted to the controller 14 through the audio processor 17 and an ID identification circuit and are controlled in accordance with the ID signal.
