PURPOSE:To make it possible to detect not only a rotary angle (position) but also rotary acceleration, by detecting the shift amount between two cord wheels different in inertia generated when said cord wheels are rotated. CONSTITUTION:Two cord wheels 3, 4 have slits 8 and, when the slits 8 are superposed to fixed slits 5, 5', lights emitted from light emitting part 1, 1' are received by light receiving parts 2, 2' to detect a rotary position. The cord wheel 3 low in inertia is connected to a rotary shaft 10 in a state near to a rigid body and almost integrally rotated along with the rotary shaft 10. The cord wheel 4 high in inertia is clamped through spoke parts 6 comprising a flexible member and the acceleration generated therein is slightly delayed from that generated in the cord wheel 3 and this delay quantity is proportional to acceleration. The shift angle generated between the cord wheels 3, 4 is measured from the timewise shift of optical signals received by the light receiving parts 2, 2' and processed by an operation circuit to make it possible to calculate acceleration.
