PURPOSE:To produce an oxygen-containing compound such as acetic acid from a synthetic gas, in high yield and selectivity, by subjecting a carrier for supporting rhodium to a pretreatment comprising a combination of the support of an alkali metal, the calcination, and the washing with an acidic aqueous solution, and using the rhodium catalyst having improved activity in the above process. CONSTITUTION:A porous inorganic solid substance carrier is calcined in the presence of an alkali metal salt such as halide, inorganic acid salt, organic acid salt, etc., of Li, Na, K or Rb, to decrease the large pores having a pore radius of >=100Angstrom existing in the untreated carrier substance and improve the uniformity of the pore-size distribution, while practically keeping the mode of the pore-size distribution (40-100Angstrom ) unchanged. The calcined substance is heated in an aqueous solution of an acid such as oxalic acid, nitric acid, etc., to remove the alkali metal salt, and then the remaining acid is removed with a large amount of distilled water. Rhodium is supported on the pretreated carrier, and carbon monoxide is made to react with hydrogen in the presence of the catalyst to obtain an oxygen-containing compound composed of acetic acid, acetaldehyde or ethanol. |
