The heat exchanger comprises a housing containing (horizontal) pipes to transport a medium and means to produce heat transfer by supplying a liquid in the form of drops on to the pipes. These means comprise liquid (22) supply tubes (13) with small openings (21) longitudinally spaced in their walls and mantles (18) which surround the tubes with clearance over most of their length and are provided with narrow transverse gaps (20) such that the liquid (22) passing through the openings (21) collects (23) in the lower part of the mantles and passes (24) through the gaps through capillary action. The mantle may consist of rings (18) axially pressurised to leave only capillary gaps between them. If the tube is e.g. 150 cm long with 20 mm outside diameter, the rings preferably have an internal diameter of 22 mm and 10 mm width.
