The known prodn. of H2O2 by the cyclic steps of reducing, oxidising, and extracting a working soln. contg. a working cpd. (I) (alkylated anthraquinone, and the corresp. hydroquinone, tetrahydroanthraquinone, and tetrahydroanthrohydroquinone) is improved as follows: (a) the mol. ratio of the nuclearly hydrogenated tetra-hydro components of (I) is increased in a 1st soln. which is to be added to the working soln. by adjusting the concn. of the non-nuclearly hydrogenated (I) to be not more than the max. solubility of the alkylated anthrahydroquinone formed in the 1st soln. at the hydrogenation temp.; (b) the 1st soln. is hydrogenated over a Pd catalyst at nor more than 50 deg.C/50-400 kPa to increase the mol. ratio of the tetrahydro components of (I) without forming substantial amts. of undesirable by-prods.; and (c) the hydrogd. 1st soln. is added to the working soln.
