The appts. comprises a quartz lens (16) capable of collecting light from a flame (12) of a particular wavelength which indicates a flame on or an off condition. A filter (20) passing only electromagnetic radiation, preferably the ultraviolet type, changes from a flame on to a flame off condition. A solid state gallium-Arsenide-Phosphide photocell (22) is provided for receiving a portion of the electromagnetic radiation passed by the filter (20). - A sensed light signal, generated by the photocell (22) is passed to a circuit (26) which processes a signal indicative of whether the burner (14) is producing a flame (12), the level of the flame and also, where applicable, whether only a pilot flame is present.
