Ethyl apovincaminate (I) is prepd. by treating apovincaminic acid (II) with ethanol at ambient temp. in the presence of derivs. of aminopyridine and trinitrobenzene as esterification agents, in a polar solvent. - In a specified process, the esterification agents are 2-fluoro- 1,3,5-trinitro benzene (III) nad 4-dimethylamino pyridine (IV). The pred. solvent is acetonitrile.
