O-Alkyl-S-(alpha-branched alkyl) alkyl phosphonothioates of formula R-P(:O)(OR1)(SR2) (I) are prepd. by treating an O-alkyl alkyl phosphonic acid halide R-P(:O)(OR1)X (II) with an alpha branched alkyl mercaptan HSR2 (III) (X = halogen, esp. chlorine). - The reaction is effected in the presence of an acid acceptor, such as triethylamine, and a smaller quantity of an auxiliary base, such as dimethylamino pyridine.
