Heading H1K A semi-conductor thermoelectric element is inserted in the current path between a superconductor and a normal conductor so that the resulting Peltier effect acts to reduce heat transfer between the normal conductor and the superconductor; the arrangement is suitable for magnets or transformers with superconductor windings. Fig. 1 shows a direct current arrangement in which a P-type thermoelectric element 6 and an N-type thermoelectric element 7 are connected between the ends of copper conductors 1 and 2 and superconductor 3. With current flowing as indicated, the Peltier effect is such that the superconductor junctions tend to be cooled and the copper junctions tend to be heated so that heat transfer between the superconductor and copper elements is reduced. An alternative arrangement is described for A.C. applications in which there is a parallel arrangement of a P-type and an N-type thermoelectric element at each end, each element being in series with an appropriately poled rectifier so that current flow through the correct thermoelectric element to provide the desired heat characteristics. In a further modification, a number of thermoelectric elements are connected in series with copper portions at each end, each thermoelectric element being associated with a separate cooling arrangement. The thermoelectric element may consist of bismuth-antimony telluride, bismuth telluride, bismuth selenide, bismuth-selenium telluride, lead selenide, lead telluride or bismuth antimonide (88% Bi, 12% SB). Coolants for the superconductor chamber may consist of vaporizing hydrogen, air, carbon dioxide, ethylene, Xenon or ammonia. The superconductor may consist of Nb 3 Sn, NbZr, vanadium-gallium or vanadium-silicon.
