A description is given of a pressure bar for a belt grinding machine, composed of a carrier (20) which is directed transversely to the feed direction of the workpiece (14), of a flexible pressure plate (30) which is displaceably mounted on said carrier perpendicularly to the grinding plane, and of a plurality of single-acting actuating cylinders (42) by means of which portions, located one next to the other transversely to the feed direction, of the pressure plate (30) can be displaced perpendicularly to the grinding plane. For a uniform grinding even of corrugated workpiece surfaces, in the case of said pressure bar for a belt grinding machine, a pressure member (40), intended for bearing on the pressure plate (30), is connected to the piston rod (68) of each actuating cylinder (42) such that it can move about axes parallel to the grinding plane, but is secured with respect to a rotation about a vertical axis perpendicular to the grinding plane. <IMAGE>
