The already installed double glazing unit (1,2) is filled in-situ with an insulating gas to replace the air between the glass panes and thus improve its heat insulating efficiency. The operation is pref. carried out by drilling bores (3) near the lower and upper edges of one pane using a drill (9) of which the tip is ground to a narrow cone angle to prevent glass breaking out from the end of the bore, thus weakening the pane and leaving splinters in the cavity, to eliminate the need for coolant. - A gas heavier than air is fed through the lower bore whilst the gas emerging from the upper bore is monitored (11). The filling operation is stopped when the air is largely displaced. The bores are then closed with sealing paste and decorative covers fitted.
