The invention relates to a drive for a device for limiting short-circuit currents in electrical transmission and distribution systems which is used at a central point. The drive which is supplied by the short-circuit current is intended to be capable of being driven by the short-circuit currents occurring at the individual outputs, it being possible to match the dynamics of its movement to the magnitude of the short-circuit currents. This is achieved in that three windings are arranged in a magnetic circuit: a fixed primary winding (4), a short-circuiting cylinder (5) which can be moved a long distance and has a small mass, and a short-circuit winding (3) which is split into a plurality of winding elements, said short-circuit winding (3) being provided on its winding elements with connections (9), and each winding element (10 to 13; 31) being allocated to one output of the system, in that each winding element is connected to current gates (16 to 23; 26 to 30) such that a high sensitivity (that is to say a suitable response value of the respective short-circuit current to the movement of the short-circuiting cylinder) is achieved, depending on the position and/or magnitude of the short-circuit current occurring at the outputs. <IMAGE>
