Process for preparing adrenochrome-monosemicarbazone

1-Methyl-3-hydroxy-5-semicarbazono-6-oxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydroindole (adrenochrome-monosemicarbazone) is obtained by electrolytic oxidation of 3,4-dihydroxy- alpha -[(methylamino)methyl]benzyl alcohol (adrenaline) in water, which contains an auxiliary electrolyte, and subsequent reaction of the 1-methyl-3-hydroxy-5,6-dioxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydroindole, which is obtained as an intermediate, with semicarbazide. The product is produced in a high degree of purity and in good yield. The compound has a haemostatic action and can also be used as an intermediate for preparing other haemostatic agents.
