A powdered material specimen (1) is poured into a measuring vessel (2) which is provided with a measuring instrument (4) for measuring the volume of the material specimen (1) and with a vibrator (3). As a result of the vibrations of the vibrator (3), the material specimen (1) is converted to a geometrically definable, for example, cylindrical, shape. The volume and the pneumatic resistance of the material specimen are then measured, the latter by means of a measuring instrument (9) for the time required for the passage of a constant quantity of air supplied via a compressed-air line (8). An evaluation unit (7) connected by means of inputs to the latter measuring instrument (9), to a terminal for entering the coefficient of specific mass of the material specimen (1) and to the former measuring instrument (4) determines the specific surface of the powdered material and displays the value digitally on a display unit (10). As a result, the specific surface of materials having any structure whatsoever and having any coefficient of specific mass whatsoever can be determined rapidly and with high measurement precision. <IMAGE>
