In a hydraulic brake system which essentially comprises a pedal-operated tandem master cylinder (3), a servo pressure supply system with a pump (8) driven by an electric motor and pressure medium storage tank (31), and a servo pressure control valve (7), the tandem master cylinder (3) is provided with a bore (24), through which an actuating rod (25) acting on the primary piston (4) is guided, that end of which remote from the primary piston (4) interacts with a pilot pressure piston (16) displaceably supported in the bore (24), which piston is in turn coupled to the brake pedal (19) by way of a piston rod (17) with piston (18). In the bore (24) between the primary piston (4) and the pilot pressure piston (16), a ring piston (26) is also displaceably supported, which divides the space between the primary piston (4) and the pilot pressure piston (16) into two chambers (59 and 44), of which the one is connected to a servo vessel (6) of the tandem master cylinder (3) and the other to the pressure medium storage tank (31). In the working chamber (44), an annular disc (29) is also supported, which has a rising ramp (30), which interacts with the actuating pin (32) of an electrical switch (33), which switches on the pump (8) when the pilot pressure piston (16) has displaced the annular disc (29) in the actuating direction.
