The invention relates to a device for obtaining mechanical work from the potential energy of a liquid and contains on the axis of rotation (1) of a generator (7) three or more drums (4) with coiled cables (8), which carry vessels (9) at their ends. On each side of the drums (4) a brake (3) is located and on one side of each an internal gear rim, with which a gear wheel on an electric motor axis (11) can be brought into engagement. Below the axis of rotation (1) a liquid distributor (D) is located, the pipes (10) of which lead to the vessels (9) on the cables (8). The vessels (9) are of cylindrical design with conical bases and have a closing element (33) on a holder (30), which serves for the vertical alignment and mounting of the vessel. On the vessel (9) an auxiliary vessel (25) is located with openings and cover, to which a float is fixed. <IMAGE>
