A ferry for conveying cars and passengers, with at least two, preferably three, car decks (1, 2, 3) which are situated one above the other and extend in the longitudinal direction of the ship. The space under the bulkhead deck (1) has traditionally been used as living space and as an oversized engine room. To increase the capacity of the ferry, the other car decks have been attached above the bulkhead deck (1), in which case the external dimensions of the ship have often had to be increased at the same time in order to obtain adequate stability. In the present ferry it is proposed to arrange a car deck (3) in the form of a large, elongated space under the bulkhead deck and to arrange the main engine in the side of the ship. An increased capacity without changing the external dimensions of the ship is thereby obtained together with an improvement in the stability of the ship. <IMAGE>
