PURPOSE:To produce polyethylene or high-MW atactic polypropylene in high activity, by using a catalyst comprising a titanium compound having a cyclopentadienyl group and a specified aluminoxane. CONSTITUTION:An aluminoxane is obtained by reacting a dialkylaluminum of formula I (wherein R<4> is methyl or ethyl and X is a halogen), e.g., diethylaluminum monochloride, with water. A catalyst is formed by mixing a titanium compound of formula II (wherein cp is a cyclopentadienyl group, and R<1>, R<2>, and R<3> are each a 1-6C alkyl group or a cyclopentadienyl group H, or a halogen), e.g., bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium dichloride, with said aluminoxane in amounts to provide an aluminum/titanium atomic ratio of abut 1-100,000 and an olefin is polymerized in the presence of this catalyst. |
