PURPOSE:To miniaturize the operating section by giving density adjusting function to a key that sets half tone mode and binary mode selectively and making the density variable in selected mode when the same key is operated continuously. CONSTITUTION:In a picture reading device that reads picture information optically, a half tone mode corresponding to full color, a half tone mode key 45 that designates the density, a binary mode corresponding to monochrome or seven colors, and a binary mode key 46 that designates the density are provided in an operating section 5. When the key 45 or key 46 is operated, the number of times of continuous operation is counted, and the density is displayed in a density display section 486 according to counted value. Accordingly, it is not necessary to provide a key for adjusting density separately, and therefore the operating section 5 can be made small, and as the density can be set freely by operating the same key, the good operability is attained.
