PURPOSE:A copolyester which can be crystallized and is excellent in heat resistance, modulus, flex strength and impact resistance, comprising specified comonomers. CONSTITUTION:1, 2-Bis( 2-chloro (or bromo)-phenoxy )ethane-4, 4'-dicarboxylic acid (esterifiable derivative) obtained by reacting 3-chloro (or bromo)-4- hydroxybenzoic acid (esterifiable derivative) obtained by the nucleus halogena tion of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (esterifiable derivative) with Cl or Br with an ethylene dihalide in the presence of an alkali compound is transesterified with an alkylene glycol, and the product is polycondensed to obtain a copolyester mainly consisting of 0.5-99.5mol% structural units of formula I and 99.5-0.5mol% structural units of formula II (wherein m and n are each 2,4 or 6, X is Cl or Br, Y is methyl or methoxy, X and Y are each Cl or Br, and the methyl and the methoxy are each bonded to the carbon ortho to the adjacent oxygen atom in the benzene ring.
