Before entering the combustion chamber of a reciprocating or rotary piston IC engine, liq. or gaseous fuel is intimately mixed with air and finely atomised water, pref. in a restricted chamber in the inlet manifold. The resulting mixt. is ignited to cause primary combustion at a temp. lower by 1-5 deg.C than the critical knocking temp for that mixt., and this combustion initiates a secondary combustion stage. Water is induced by engine suction, and/or injected by a pump actuated in dependence on combustion temp., as measured by a sensor. The water may derive at least partly from exhaust gas condensate. Instead of low-octane lead-free petrol, the fuel may be acetylene, pref. preheated. |
