A machine for continuously welding thermoplastic sheets comprises two endless belts 12, 14 of which at least one belt 14 is made of metal and between which overlapping sheets 11 to be welded are guided, a continuously heated loaded welding wheel 15 which is narrower than the metal belt 14 and which supplies welding heat thereto and to the sheets 11, and follower rollers 18 mounted on a support 17 for the wheel 15 adjacent to the belt 14 so that their running surface 24 is lower than the running surface 25 of the wheel 15 by a distance corresponding to the thickness of the belt 14. Two thermoplastic sheets 11 pass from brakeable supply reels 10 on to a table in the centre of which the belt 12 circulates, the belt 12 being made of fibreglass fabric coated or impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene or coated with silicon rubber. The wheel 15 is pressed against the spring steel belt 14 by a load P1. A heatinsulating support roller 16 is provided. A water-cooled roller 20 acted on by a load P2 and of the same width as the belt 14 may be provided. A support roller 21 is provided. The rollers 16, 21 may be replaced by a single table. Instead of the roller 16 the table may have a heat-insulating inset, e.g. a plastics plate coated with phenolic resin. The welded sheets are wound on to a roll 23. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the belt 12 comprises a second metal strip co-operating with a second welding wheel. |
