PURPOSE:To improve the abrasion resistance of the title medium by forming a substrate layer contg. synthetic resin particles having less than a specified mean particle diameter on a nonmagnetic base body, providing a magnetic layer on the substrate layer, and furnishing ruggedness corresponding to the particles of the substrate layer to the surface of the magnetic layer to reduce the contact area with a magnetic head. CONSTITUTION:The particles of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (72% ethylene), polystyrene contg, an SO3 radical, partially cross-linked polyvinyl chloride, etc. having 80-99% gel fraction (the percentage ratio of the dry weight after immersion in an org. solvent capable of easily dissolving the resin for 24hr and drying to the weight before immersion) and 5-50% swelling ratio, namely the ratio of the weight after immersion in the solvent increased by absorbing the solvent to the weight before immersion, and having <=0.2mu particle diameter are used. When the particles are adhe sive, the particles are directly used, and a coating liq. contg. 1-10wt%, based on the weight of the particles, binder resin is prepared, when the particle is not adhesive. The coating liq. is coated on a substrate to form a substrate layer consisting of a single particle layer. A magnetic metallic thin film is vapor-deposited on the substrate layer to obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent sensitivity, abrasion resistance and durability.
