<p>Carpets or like floor coverings having a base fabric in which pile fibres which may be composed of synthetic material, are bonded by an embossed foamed coating applied to the back of the base fabric, are produced by applying to the back of the base fabric a layer of foamable plasticised thermoplastic material, allowing the material to foam and gel while supplying heat thereto, and applying pressure to the layer by means of a cooled embossing roller so as to cause penetration of the thermoplastic material into the base fabric whereby to anchor the pile fibres the pressure being insufficient to destroy the foam structure of the thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic material may completely penetrate the base fabric and surround part of the pile fibres to anchor them, the exposed surface of the layer of thermoplastic material being provided with sucker-hollows over its whole surface. The thermoplastic layer may be embossed with length and/or other markings, e.g. a trade mark. The carpet may be produced on an apparatus which comprises a hopper for the foamable thermoplastic material, a meshed endless belt entrained about two rollers and moving on rollers or guide ledges so as to form a guide path between the entrainment rollers and supporting the pile side of the base fabric, a heat source, e.g. in infra-red radiator or hot air nozzles, above the belt which causes foaming of the thermoplastic material, and a cooled embossing roller pressing on the foamed material on the face of the carpet remote from the pile and located after the heat source in the direction of feed of the carpet, the embossing roller being positioned above the entrainment roller at the outlet end of the guide path.</p> |
