PURPOSE:To attain the dictionary retrieval with high efficiency by retrieving a dictionary memory means after rearranging the partial character strings produced based on the input character strings in the order suited to retrieval. CONSTITUTION:The character strings supplied from a character string input means 2 are delivered to a partial character string producing means 3 by an indication of a control means 1. The means 3 produces a partial character string group based on the input character strings and sends it to a partial character string memory means 4. A partial character string rearranging means 5 rearranges the partial character string groups in the means 4 in the order suited to the retrieval of a dictionary retrieval means 6 and also sends plural same partial character strings back to the means 4 if they exist. Then the means 6 sends the word groups obtained through retrieval of a dictionary memory means 7 to a word memory means 8 by means of the partical character string group obtained by an indication of the means 1. This attains the effective extraction of information out of a secondary memory which requires a long time and then attains the effective dictionary retrieval.
