PURPOSE:In producing an unsaturated alcohol useful as an intermediate for chemicals by hydrogenating an unsaturated aldehyde, to obtain the aimed compound advantageously in high catalytic effect by a uniform reaction, by using an amorphous alloy as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An unsaturated aldehyde such as crotonaldehyde, etc. is brought into contact with hydrogen by the use of an amorphous alloy consisting of (a) one or more metals selected from Au, Ag, and Cu and (b) one or more elements selected from Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Ti, Zr, Hf, B, Al, Ga, Si, and Ge, having a composition ratio of the metal a of preferably 90-10atom% as a catalyst in the presence of the catalyst in a molar ratio of aldehyde/hydrogen of 100-1/100 at normal pressure-20kg/cm<2>G at 50-400 deg.C, to give a corresponding alcohol advantageously. |
