PURPOSE:To set automatically the direction of phase shift to be applied to a reproduced modified low-frequency conversion chrominance carrier signal correctly by recording a phase shift direction identification signal in a recording signal to use the reproduced phase shift direction identification signal at reproduction. CONSTITUTION:A signal Sr comprising a signal conversing the phase shift direction of a modified low-frequency conversion chrominance carrier signal Slc, a low carrier frequency modulation wave Sfm and a phase shift direction identification signal Sps is fed to a magnetic head 12 from a recording amplifier RA and undergoes rotary recording. A preamplifier PrA applies a reproducing signal to a video signal processing circuit VSDC and a phase shift direction identification signal detection circuit PSDC at the reproduction mode, the processing circuit VSDC uses an output signal P8 of the detection circuit PSDC to obtain a reproduced chrominance carrier signal from the modified low frequency conversion chrominance carrier signal in the reproducing signal, the low carrier frequency modulation wave in the reproducing signal is subjected to frequency modulation and a reproduced composite color video signal is fed to an output terminal 13.
