PURPOSE:To attain compactness by using plural solid-state image pickup elements so as to apply color separation to information on the same position of an original though a single image forming lens and read the information at the same time without a memory means thereby eliminating the need for plural image forming lenses. CONSTITUTION:An illumination device 110 lights a slit region including a read line A on a color original O, the reflected light from the original is reflected by mirrors 122A, 124A, and 126A, made incident in the image forming lens 120 and each image of the original on the read line A is formed on the photodetection region of the solid-state image pickup elements 122, 124 and 126. The luminous flux made incident in each solid-state image pickup element is subject to color separation into red, green and blue by filters 122B, 124B, and 126B, the solid-state image pickup element 122 reads the color separation of the color information on the original O with red color, and the solid-state pickup element 124, 126 read respectively the color separation of color informa tion with green and blue colors.
